Timo van der Kuil

Hi! I’m Timo, a PhD Candidate in the Department of Methodology and Statistics at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. I work in the AI-Aided Knowledge Discovery Lab and the Natural Language and Text Processing Lab, applying my research to ASReview, an open-source AI-assisted systematic review tool. I have previously worked at the Dutch Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and collaborated with the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW).

After earning my Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Twente, I decided to pursue a PhD. My research explores how AI and NLP can improve systematic reviews—reducing the time researchers spend on screening while allowing them to spend more time on analysis and discovery. Throughout my work, I prioritize ethical considerations to ensure responsible and reproducible AI in research.
